Hello My Body Is A Temple-Part 3

“That guy would be dead” – Dr. Shah

In September of last year I had a severe case of pancreatitis caused by a gallstone. I was in ICU 3 days and almost died. I ended up spending 23 days total and having 5 surgeries to get back to normal.  At the end of my initial stay, I asked my Dr. (Dr. Shah) how bad was it; no one was telling me.  She said that I had almost died, if it wasn’t for the fact that I was in great shape, I would have died September 4th or 5th. I told her I wanted to show her a photo. So, I showed her the photo of me (See below) the day before I began my transformation. I was 288lbs. She looked at the photo and said flatly – “That guy would be dead”.  I cried.  It was one of the most powerful statements I’ve ever heard and I am thankful to be alive to have heard it.  It’s still powerful as I write this.

This transformation that we are talking about, it can literally save your life and at a minimum can add several active years to it.  It already has had this effect on mine.

So, let’s talk about the plan. Last article I talked about the step and I said today I would talk about Step 4 (You should have already completed steps 1-3 before and I will revisit setting goals in the next article).

Just a reminder:

Step 4 – Develop a plan to achieve your goal(s). With weight-loss it’s all about what you take in. Your plan therefore has to start with taking in less food than you currently eat.

I started very basically, with what I call ONE PLATE.  It’s very simple. You can eat ONE PLATE of food for each breakfast, lunch and dinner.  No stacking, no food falling off the plate. Eat one serving per meal on one plate.  For me this was already a significant decrease in food.  If you get hungry between meals have a piece of fruit or a piece of vegetable. You can eat whatever you want on that plate. Obviously, the more conscious you are about what you are eating the better. A plate full of bacon is probably not a great choice and we need to start making better choices but THIS IS NOT A DIET.  You have no restrictions on what you can eat.  But, yes, you can only have one plate. Not a main dish plate and desert, ONE PLATE. If you want a pie of cake/pie then put it on the plate.

For many of us, this will be a decrease in food.  We are used to seconds or thirds even or multiple plates…a plate for meat and veggies, then a salad plate, then a desert plate.  NO.  ONE PLATE. If you want Salad, put it on the plate.

You might get hungry initially; this is to be expected. We need to retrain our bodies to the new reality. Remember when I said that our bodies are these incredible organisms that are DESIGNED to adapt for us.  That fat we have is an adaption that we’ve been over eating. It’s going to take a while for your body to get used to eating the right amount.

When you get hungry eat a piece of fruit or a vegetable.  If you are still hungry after you eat it, eat another one…and another one.

Not too difficult right? Limit to ONE PLATE, eat as much fruit/veggies between your 3 meals as you want.  I lost my first 35lbs this way with only this change to my lifestyle. Notice I haven’t said anything about exercise…we are not there yet. Exercise is NOT the key to weight loss. Yes, to fitness, but NOT to weight loss. We will discuss exercise in the future but for now – ONE PLATE.

Next week we well talk about goal setting in more detail and I will give you some tips to fire up your metabolism.
